What should I wear for a school dance?? (I'm a guy)?

if dress code formal, should dress formal dance, not semiformal event. not mention wearing button-up shirt , trousers business casual rather semiformal. don't know standard formality in canada, in states, formal dance in high school command @ least suit, , in adult world, tuxedo. semiformal event, jacket , tie appropriate. ultimately, better show in suit, , if other guys dressed down, remove tie or jacket.

i'm in 9th grade. dress code formal, thinking of maybe "semi-formal" button-up shirt , pants. going friends (girls , guys). think should wear?? want modest!
