TV, BLURAY, AV RECIEVER PROBLEMS?

have samsung plasma 3d capable tv, samsung bluray pvr 3d capable & pioneer vsx 817 av receiver.
trying audio run through speakers of receiver have no sound.
have connected pvr tv via hdmi , thats working fine , have sound comming through tv speakers. have tried connecting av receiver tv via optical cable(no hdmi connections) cannot manage sound @ all?
past tv wasn't 3d capable , had no troubles whatsoever of surround sound whatsoever has got me stumped.
