Something wrong with my ball python?

got ball python, 2 months old , first reptile. have had him week , have bunch of questions him. first off, tried feeding him , wouldnt eat, tried feed him in cage because man @ store said there no such thing "cage aggressive". mouse got wood chips on , figured wasnt him, little bit ok if swallows it? , after took him plastic container didnt have woodchips , got scared , hid head, couldnt feed him. figured if waited enough hungry , not care if in different cage , eat mouse anyway. oh way thawed mouse not life one. thing im not sure heat. have heat lamp , pad on 1 side hide on both sides , water bowl on cooler side. not have digital thermometer , guess should because dont think hot enough since bp crawls under wood chips heat pad is, think might not warm enough since has heat going right on head pad. can me please dont know reptiles , dont want bad happen him
