Researching lineage? Help!?

told familly had interest in researching , building family tree. gave me info made comment "if serious, why don't go mormons? have down science!" confused me, many reasons, because there isn't single part of our familly involved wirh mormon church! said how church has got records on file said quite accurate. believe thinks have records in general when in fact can find mormon specific lineage. can expand on please? thank you!
