Printer not showing icons?

got hp printer model no.c4480, don't think make anymore. it's 3 years old. bought new hp computer windows 7, , hooked printer it, , prints fine. problem printer not show icons on screen instance, don't know when ink cartridges running low or something. can't settings printer. computer reads printer enough make print , nothing else. contacted hp , tried me purchase $169 warranty on computer tech explain problem. what's going on here? don't seem right. want printer show me ink icons, have cost me $169 it? what's best thing me do? thanks
