Normally how deep are gas lines leading from the street to a private house?

street 3 feet lower property & marked directly gas meter on outside of porch next front steps. debating putting support post halfway steps have dig hole 2 feet deep 4"x 4" cemented in & don't want come near gas line. ain't nothing until answer guys , natgrid.
