What is photosynthesis?

photosynthesis (from greek [photo-], "light," , [synthesis], "putting together", "composition") process converts carbon dioxide organic compounds, sugars, using energy sunlight.

light reaction
of chemical reactions take place during first stage of photosynthesis , require presence of light. during light reactions, energy captured light chlorophyll , accessory pigments drives production of atp, source of energy later used drive production of carbohydrates.

dark reaction
of chemical reactions take place during second stage of photosynthesis , not require light. during dark reactions, energy released atp (created light reactions) drives fixation of carbon carbon dioxide in organic molecules. calvin cycle forms part of dark reactions. long atp available, dark reactions can occur in darkness or in light.
