Do I need to buy a receiver/amp to power my system?

bought polk audio psw110 subwoofer , have monitor 30 speakers on way. sub power speaker since has amp or need buy receiver/amp make these bad boys work? if so, model recommend? harman kardon - avr 1700 on sale 250 @ best buy @ moment.

p.s. @ moment, using 2.1 system music/movies later convert 5.1 home theater system.
