How do boats float and sink?
boat able float on water because of property called displacement, related buoyancy , best expressed archimedes' principle.
weight of ship (which can considered environment containing air) pushes down on water, , water pushes back. there sufficient water provide opposition force, ship remains @ top of water. (this why cannot float while in regular bathtub, there not enough water push (displace) weight pushing down on water).
down-force exerted boat on water less displacement force provided water boat sitting in, boat float. if down-force equal displacement force (aka neutrally buoyant), vessel neither float or sink down (pretty suitable submarines , other vessels sink on command , come again). if down-force greater displacement force, boat sink.
